NSS Adventure Camp at ABVIMAS, Manali (H.P)
5th - 14th November 2024
Ten NSS Volunteers (Harshit Pandey, Aryan Dabas, Mayank Sharma, Samay Pawar, Savita Kumari, Shruti Yadav, Chahat Goyal, Gargi Rathore, Yogita Kanyal and Mayank Bhardwaj) from Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurugram participated in the 10 days NSS Adventure Camp held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali, from 5th to 14th November, 2024. The camp was organised to develop unity, leadership, and survival skills among NSS volunteers representing Haryana.
Day 1 (5th November, 2024): Opening Ceremony and Museum Visit
The camp commenced with an opening ceremony to welcome volunteers and brief them on the camp's objectives. Participants explored exhibits on mountaineering tools, techniques, and renowned climbers, gaining an introduction to mountain culture. The volunteers from five states were divided into seven groups to promote unity.
Day 2 (6th November, 2024): Arrival and Rock Climbing
Rock climbing sessions introduced volunteers to climbing techniques under the guidance of Mr. Deenanath. Volunteers practised climbing in teams after a safety briefing. A session on safety knots was delivered by Mr. Karan Himalaya.
Day 3 (7th November, 2024): Climbing on Varied Rocks and Cultural Exploration
Volunteers practised climbing on different types of rocks to familiarise themselves with the environment and improve adaptability. The group visited the Hadimba Temple, a significant historical and religious site in Manali, to experience the local culture and spiritual landmark, gaining insights into its historical significance.
Day 4 (8th November, 2024): Rappelling and Cultural Event Practice
The day began with introduction of rappelling. Both traditional and mechanical rappelling techniques were demonstrated by Mr. Neil Negi. Although risky, the volunteers performed well under expert supervision. A session on "Mountain Manners" emphasised responsible behaviour and environmental awareness by Mr. Tek Chang. For the cultural performance, volunteers were given time to rehearse for their performance.
Day 5 (9th November, 2024): Morning Exercise and Artificial Wall Climbing
The day started with morning exercise, focusing on flexibility and strength building. Half of the volunteers performed artificial wall climbing to enhance their skills at large elevation. Volunteers visited the renowned Mall Road to enjoy local cuisine and purchase souvenirs.
Day 6 (10th November, 2024): Trek to Solang Nala
A challenging 14-kilometre trek to Solang Nalla was undertaken. The volunteers pushed their physical limits and successfully reached the destination by noon. Then, the volunteers relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Solang Valley followed with wholesome lunch.
Day 7 (11th November, 2024): Trek to Shagadug and Tent Making
Reaching an altitude of 10,000 feet, volunteers trekked to Shagadug, known for its pristine camping environment. Mr. Karan conducted a session on assembling tents for mountain expeditions. A bonfire session strengthened team bonds and celebrated the day’s accomplishments.
Day 8 (12th November, 2024): Ziplining, Anjani Mahadev Trek, and Stretcher Making
Volunteers experienced ziplining, an adrenaline-pumping activity over the river. Later, the volunteers trekked to Anjani Mahadev, a serene and spiritual location that offered a sense of tranquillity and connection with nature. Volunteers also learned the critical skill of stretcher-making for mountain rescue operations.
Day 9 (13th November, 2024): Trek to Manali and Market Visit
The group trekked back to Manali, where they were warmly welcomed by ABVIMAS. Volunteers had some leisure time to explore the local markets and engage with their new friends from different states.
Day 10 (14th November, 2024): Closing Ceremony
The camp concluded with a Closing Ceremony led by Sri Deena Nath Thakur (Course Incharge, ABVIMAS). On the final day, the Volunteers from all five states stood together, reflecting on the bonds they had formed and the experiences they had gained. The ceremony began with the distribution of certificates, a symbol of the hard work and dedication shown throughout the camp.
Benefit/Outcome: The NSS Adventure Camp at ABVIMAS was a transformative experience, fostering physical endurance, teamwork, and cultural awareness. Participants returned with newfound skills, unity, and cherished memories.
